چکیده

Edmund Beecher Wilson [5] in the US published An Atlas of Fertilization and Karyokinesis of the Ovum (hereafter called An Atlas) in 1895. The book presents photographs by photographer Edward Leaming that capture stages of fertilization [6], the fusion of sperm [7] and egg [8] and early development of sea urchin [9] (Toxopneustes variegatus) ova, or egg [8] cell. Prior to An Atlas, no one photographed of egg [8] cell division in clear detail. Wilson obtained high quality images of egg [8] cells by cutting the cells into thin sections and preserving them throughout different stages of development. An Atlas helped Wilson develop methods to present key stages of fertilization [6] and development, which he later used in his textbook The Cell in Development and Inheritance, first published in 1896. Furthermore, An Atlas was the first publication to present accurate images of the fertilized egg [10] cell during early stages of development.

Edmund Beecher Wilson [4] contributed to cell biology, the study of cells, in the US during the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. His three editions of The Cell in Development and Inheritance [5] (or Heredity [6]) in 1896, 1900, and 1925 introduced generations of students to cell biology. In The Cell, Wilson described the evidence and theories of his time about...

Amphioxus, and the Mosaic Theory of Development (1893), by Edmund Beecher Wilson

Edmund Beecher Wilson [5] experimented with Amphioxus (Branchiostoma [6]) embryos in 1892 to identify what caused their cells to differentiate into new types of cells during the process of development. Wilson shook apart the cells at early stages of embryonic development, and he observed the development of the isolated cells. He observed that in the normal development of Amphioxus, all three ma...

Background: This study examined the effect of including one of two growth factors (100 ng/ml IGF-1 or 20 ng/ ml EGF) in combination with one of two antioxidants (50 μM cysteamine or 50 μM beta-mercaptoethanol) in invitro maturation of buffalo oocytes, followed by fertilization and subsequent development of embryos. Materials and Methods: The oocytes were recovered by in vivo ovum pick-up techni...

Investigation of the Effect of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome on the Expression of the Sirtuin-3 Gene in the Ovum of the NMRI Mice

Introduction: Increasing levels of free radicals in the ova reduce the quality of their fertilization. Investigations have revealed the elevated production of tissue and serum-free radicals in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Sirtuin-3 is located in mitochondria and plays an important role in the deactivation of free radicals. This study aimed to investigate the expression of the Sirtuin-3...
